Legacy Applications & Systems
What is a Legacy System?
A legacy system is an existing system that an organization has invested into over the years and has now become an integral part of the organization.
Why Migrate?
Investing more money redoing a running system may seem unthinkable, but there are a few good reasons to migrate:
- Support: Some Legacy Systems may have been in place for many years and were created to run on antiquated or inadequate technology. This can lead to problems in supporting the system either from a hardware or software standpoint. Migrating the system ensures the system's growth and reduces higher costs for maintaining outdated hardware or software.
- Performance & Scale: Often, the need and scale of a system changes over time. Some systems may be operating on restrictions due to hardware or software limitations.
- Flexibility: Many Legacy Systems are still running on local machines, intranets, or are platform dependant. Organizations may be seeking to migrate the system to a technology that is more portable.
- Image: Some Legacy Systems may have been built at a time when there were limited graphically or application flow options. Migrating a system can allow you to take advantage of advancements in higher graphic resolutions, color range, and application flow.

Why Extend?
Extending a Legacy System is the process of adding an external interface that helps manage the same data as the Legacy System. Most systems have a database backend such as Access, MYSQL, or SQL Server. These systems may be extended, adding new features or working around broken or outdated ones. Often times this may be the first step in migrating a system.
